Concourse Gallery

schools_uaStop by from February 3-26 to see art from the UA Elementary Schools.  Artists from grades K-5 are represented in painting, collage, pottery, and more.  Please stop by the gallery to support our community’s youngest artists.  Take a picture with artwork and the UArthere pin and send it to us on Twitter and Instagram to share with the rest of the community.

UA High School

This year’s musical selected by the Upper Arlington Vocal Music Department is “The Mystery of BOOMEdwin Drood”.  The show is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens.  It’s also unique in that audience participation is encouraged, and the ending could change for each show.  Don’t miss it!  Tickets are $10-$16 dollars. UA Library

There are lots of ways to participate in the arts at the library this month.  Here are a few highlights, but be sure to check their events page for more.

February 4th, 7-8 pm: Experience the cool jazz sounds of the Derek DiCenzo Trio. These three talented instrumentalists have long been some of Columbus’ finest performers. Library: Tremont Road – Main Library

February 7th, 2-3:30: Film series with “Dirty Pretty Things”. Okwe is an undocumented Nigerian in London who works as a cabbie and moonlights as a hotel attendant. Working late one evening, he is made witness to an event that leads him to uncover a darker side of his employer and his adopted city. Steve Hunt presents and leads a discussion.  96min 2009 R,  Library: Tremont Road – Main Library

February 19th, 1-2 pm: In the last of a 3-part series, we will look at the continuing influence of Giuseppe Arcimboldo on contemporary artists. We will explore the ideas of transformation and double meaning in the fascinating works of artists like Shigeo Fukuda, a Japanese artist and designer who has created amazing works including a series of provocative shadow art pieces. We will also look at Arcimboldo-inspired works by Hungarian artist Istvan Orosz, contemporary Mexican Surrealist Octavio Ocampo, and others.  Library: Tremont Road – Main Library

UA Senior Center

Take advantage of some great opportunities for Seniors to take part in the arts.  Here are some highlights for February, and you can see a full listing of monthly events here.

February 9th:  Mark Williams performs popular songs of all eras after the Sweetheart Luncheon at the Senior Center.  The luncheon starts at 11:30 with the music following, $10 pre-registration required.

February 25th, 1-3 pm:  Frosted Forest Painting with Heather Reese, $25 class fee, all supplies included.

UA Civic Association

February 24th:  get a sneak peak at the UA musical with Dinner and a Show. The UA Civic Association invites Upper Arlington Senior Citizens to attend a free dinner and dress rehearsal performance of The Mystery of Edwin Drood at the high school. Registration ends February 5 or when the limit of 400 registrants is reached. Call 583-5300 or 583-5320 to reserve your seat as registration is required. Reservations may only be made for you and/or your spouse. Please note that everyone is required to reserve their own seat. There is no wait list for this event. Contact the event director at uastage@uaca.org for questions.
After the event, all senior students participating as actors, stage crew, or musicians for the production can apply for 3 scholarships from the UACA
